What Is Right Or Wrong?

We live in a world today that has lost its sense of what is right or wrong. I believe what we see on the nightly news is a battle that individuals and groups are trying to get our society to accept new norms for life and law.  Terms like “Black lives Matter” and “Blue lives Matter” are pitting one group against another.  I personally believe all lives matter regardless of race or job. We are all created equal. No one group is better any other when it comes to the value of life.

Why is all this fighting happening? We have as a nation and as a world lost our sense of having a “North Star.” In the book of Judges we find Israel running into all kinds of problems, and God said of them in 21:25 “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Human nature is selfish and self-centered! Humans want what they want when they want it. While our motive may not be to hurt others, that may be the case when we do not consider the others needs and wants. This human nature works fine if we are all alone on a deserted island. But then add just one more person on that island and there will be problems unless we start considering the other persons physical and emotional needs. As in the verse above there needs to be someone in charge. Someone to say this is what is right and this is wrong.

This country was founded on the teachings of Christianity. Our constitution is based on the fact that all humans are to be treated equally. We all rejoice in the Bill of Rights. But my rights do not give me or anyone else the right to hurt or take others rights away. I do not have the right to steal from someone else or to cause harm to them. I cannot drive 100 miles per hour on a public street or highway without paying the consequences. When Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment He said, (Matt 22:37-40) "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'  38 This is the first and great commandment.  39 And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'  40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." Please don’t forget two things: 1) this word “love” is agape or to love sacrificially. 2) Jesus said (John 14:15) “if you love Me keep My commandments.” In other words if we love the God of the Bible we will love Him by obeying His words and love others sacrificially. Most of our problems today in our society would be resolved if we understood these two teachings of Christ and lived our lives accordingly.

I would like to share one more passage from the writings of the Apostle Paul, (1 Cor 10:31-33) “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.” The number one goal of all Christians is bring others to Christ by the way we live and love.

Jesus is our North Star that never changes and neither does His words.
